Rotary International has been deeply involved in the fight to eradicate polio around the world for many years. In 1985, The Rotary Foundation created the PolioPlus program to lead the private sector in a global effort to eradicate polio. In 1988, Rotary International partnered with the World Health Organization, UNICEF, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta to launch the Global Polio Eradication Initiative to support global immunization activities. In 2007, a financial partnership between Rotary International and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation was announced to provide $200 million over three years for the polio eradication campaign. In 2010, the partnership has grown to a goal of $555 million, with $200 million from Rotary International and $355 million from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

This organization is the directing and coordinating authority for international health work within the United Nations system. It is responsible for leading the global health agenda, setting health research agendas, establishing norms and standards, presenting evidence-based policy options, providing technical support to countries and monitoring and assessing public health trends.
